Fig Newtons and Crunchy Bacon
Today is my last day to study before comps. I had my first comprehensive-exam related nightmare last night. I wish they'd started sooner because now I am motivated to get to work. ACK! The three areas I must answer in are theory, history, and design. I've got theory in the bag. Give me about two hours to refresh on specific terminology and I've got design down, too. But history? Oh, that's not so good! I didn't really understand the history while I was studying the first time. This sucks. I hope that today before, say, 6pm I can learn the basic stats on the following history dudes: Plato, Bacon, Boyle, Newton, Sprat, Galileo, Darwin, Einstein, Milgram, and Hawking. So far I know the following general statements:

1. Plato was either greek or roman and said something about earth, air, fire, water, ether and that if you did a poor job of being a good man, you were reborn as a woman.

2. Bacon tastes good with eggs, used a lot of aphorisms, used metaphor to illustrate points such as suspicion is like bees swarming around your head.

3. Boyle? All I can think of is fleshy skin growths.

4. Newton? All I can think of is fig newtons.

5. Sprat was a part of the Royal Society who thought that metaphor and eloquence could be used to cloud the truth, and they were a bunch of Englishmen in search of the truth, so they quit on the metaphor.

6. Galileo said that the sun had spots on it, which challenged the idea that the stars, etc were made out of immutable stuff. He also told you how to make your own telescope out of household items, but you should ask your mom first.

7. Darwin used lots of illustrative examples and tried to kinda lean toward the whole "Nature as entity" thing in a way that would let people say "well, God made Nature, so maybe Darwin isn't nuts after all."

8. Einstein used lots of examples of like, rabbits sitting on the tracks while trains whizzed by.

9. Milgram was a psychologist but I can't remember what his big experiment was.

10. Hawking uses lots of stories and metaphors and generally writes about heavy stuff in ways that most Schmos can understand.

Knowing these general statements MIGHT give me enought to barf out an answer on the test, but I'm not so sure. Wish me luck.
