Calmer now
My mom called the other day and said You only have 4 months until the wedding! And then asked me about a hundred questions to which I do not know the answer!
She sent me into a panic. She's good at panics. She panics very calmly so that you believe that it is perfectly rational for her to be panicking and you wonder why YOU haven't been panicking and you feel inadequate for not realizing that it is time to panic. My mother is not sinister in her motive for all this; she does not use her power of panic for evil, only good...but still.
So I began trying to discover the answers to these questions. I realized that choosing a theme for the wedding would simplify things for my mother and i; a theme would help determine what sort of decorative doo-dads and stuff we need. After two days of sweating, tromping through crafts stores, raising our voices, and quietly crying while looking out the car window, Tom and I decided on yellow flowers (specific type negotiable) and blue butterflies.
Should have been easy to pick that but it wasn't. I discussed this all with Lizzie, who sent Rachel in on the job; her wedding was adorable, with a dessert theme. Desserts everywhere and no 'real' food to eat. Rae's parents are the musical directors of a church, so all the little old church ladies made cakes and at the reception there were little placards with the old ladies' names and the names of the cakes next to all the desserts. Liz had to send Rae in because Liz began to panic too, and say things like "Doves! Wedding shit usually has doves on it, doesn't it?"
My dad had this to say yesterday:
"Eh, you say to the florist, 'I want flowers.' The florist says 'Yeah?' You say 'Yeah, just makem look nice for a wedding. Same goes for the cake. The baker says 'You want white cake? Vanilla? Chocolate? Lemon with strawberry filling inbetween?' You say 'Yeah, yeah, that's it' and the baker does the rest. What is so hard about this?"
Today he said:
"I saw some pictures of cakes, and some of them are just beautiful! Don't pick something too traditional, it's not you. Do you want me to go to the library and try to find some more pictures? Or look on the internet?"
This is going to be a very surreal 4 months.
