Flu and Election Hangover
My election hangover is starting to fade, and I'm back reading the Britney news, thank goodness. As far as the election goes, well, nothing is really changing in my personal life, so I'm going to try to pretend politics don't exist. (I say that but I'm still reading kos and americablog etc, oops.)
My job is secure. So is Tom's. My parents' jobs are secure. So are Tom's families' jobs. We have health insurance and money in savings and a home and I'm just not going to freaking worry for a few months. Yes, I anticipate kids being drafted out of my classes. But I'll worry about that when it happens. As far as all the other bush crap goes...I'm taking some time off from worrying. EXCEPT about this:
I'm home sick. Just getting over the flu.
My dad works with elderly people. He knows that the flu kills them. Oh, like with AIDS, the death certificate often says something different--pneumonia. But with the elderly, it's the flu that weakensthe person and results in the pneumonia.
My dad (and, I guess, others in the geriatric medical community) is worried about a flu pandemic. The VA hospital that he primarily works at is already underfunded and half-way shut down due to You-Know-Who's funding cuts. There's no room (or rather, no money) for that hospital to care for veterans dying of the flu. The story will be the same at all the hospitals, veterans' or not, if the flu breaks big. People will be lining up to try to get in, and spreading the disease that way. Little kids will die. Elderly will die. People with AIDS and cancer will die. Hospital staff will get badly sick and have to stay home. My dad wonders if the government will have the nads to call quarantine on infected cities. The US is 45 MILLION flu shots short of what we usually have. For us, 20-65 years old, we'll probably just get sick and have a rotten few days. Maybe we won't get sick at all. But for children and the elderly? Cyanara. And that much-touted flu spray? Had it. It's $80 a pop and all it does is "shorten" the duration of your illness. And I'm not sure that it really does anything, frankly, except make you sneeze (after you shoot it up your nose, you tend to have a sneezing fit).
Of course, on paper it will look like we had a pneumonia outbreak. Don't be fooled. That pneumonia wouldn't have set in if the patient didn't have the flu.
Maybe this flu shot thing is part of Bush's plan to save social security. Wipe out the elderly. Oh and it will take care of that nasty homo problem, too.
You know, all a terrah-ist would have to do now is just show up with the flu and sneeze on as many people as possible. And that's not even illegal.
