Menstrual cycle leads to exciting discovery
Okay, so my periods abruptly changed three cycles ago. I won't go into it. I deemed it nothing to worry about, but tonight, bored and lonely because Tom is away, I did some googling about menstrual cycles. I was right; it's nothing to worry about. But while googling, I stumbled into a message board that seemed to originate in an alternate universe, discussing feminine hygiene products in ways I never previously imagined.
All these women were discussing things called Mooncups and Divacups. I got confused. I thought I'd stumbled into a board about diaphragms. In case you're a dude who doesn't know, diaphragms are birth control devices.
I had a friend named Lauren in college who used a diaphragm. She was older than us (22 y/o), and more worldly. She explained the diaphragm to Sara and me (19 y/o) one night over glasses of wine. A diaphragm is a thin rubbery thing that looks like half of a pingpong ball. It folds up, you stick it in your body, and it opens up like an umbrella, poof! It keeps the semen from going into the uterus. After sex, you reach in, fold the little bugger up, and pull it out.
Well, the women on this message board were talking about these Mooncups as if they were diaphragms, but it sounded like they were putting them in backwards. And then suddenly I understood: these Mooncups are supposed to go in that way, during your period. Then you pull them out again hours later and pour the menstrual blood out of them!!
YEAH! I KNOW!!
Like I said, it felt like an alternate universe!! But the more I read about these things, the more I got intrigued. They never cause TSS (which really IS horrible and can happen out of the blue; my uncle had to amputate both a girl's legs once because of TSS), they're a one-time purchase, and they don't generate much trash. If you're at home, you just rinse it out. If you're in public, you bring a damp paper towel into the stall with you and wipe it off. And despite how grodey it sounds, they apparently have a little stem on them that you hold, so it's like a little martini glass.
Can you BELIEVE it?? I don't know how I never knew about this!! Who knows if I'll try it or not, but not even KNOWING it existed?? And they've been around since the 1930's and I never knew!! Did you guys know? I feel like the world has been keeping a big secret from me.
