RE: Abandoned Puppies--4-26-02, 10pm

I was appalled this evening as I watched the "Abandoned Puppy" story. The story itself, and especially the anchorwomen's comments, presented a great deal of sympathy for puppy miller David McCord but none for the dogs themselves.

Florida police impounded the puppies because they were neglected. Neglect is a form of abuse. Thus, 38 puppies were impounded because David McCord and Jeffrey Hoover were in the act of abusing them.

Mr. McCord stated that the incident made him feel as if he was "really doing something wrong." Let's take a moment to evaluate Mr. McCord's puppy mill and see if he was, in fact, doing anything "wrong".

He had at least 38 puppies and their parent dogs in his care that he lovingly hand-raised at his residence. If Mr. McCord spent 15 minutes per day socializing with each of his puppies, it would have totalled 9.5 hours per day. Add approximately 8 parent dogs to that number, and the time spent socializing with the dogs reaches 11.5 hours. And let's say that 4 hours per day were needed to clean up after the 46 dogs. This brings the total to15.5 hours a day.

How many of us really believe that Mr. McCord spent 15.5 hours a day diligently caring for his dogs, yet didn't know that it's neglectful to leave them in a sealed van all night with no water?

Mr. McCord has done something "wrong" and I'm disgusted that your anchorwoman could exclaim with disbelief in her voice: "He's even received threats from animal activist groups!"

Moments later your program further shamed itself by cheerfully covering the rescue of the dog trapped on the abandoned tanker. Does anyone but me detect the irony?
