Elizabeth Smart
But I guess in my dull life of late there is this: that dumb journalism class I took/dropped out of a few weeks ago made me really realize how totally fake most of the news is. The fakeness of the news is not shocking to most of you; however, I am a smart girl but I had never really thought about it before. I mean, I knew things got spun this way and that, but I had no idea how little ethics are regarded and how little sympathy or attendance, even, newspeople in general feel toward the 'news.'
I saw some f$%kheads on TV talking about the way Utah police are handling the Elizabeth Smart disappearance. Truthfully, after day three or so I stopped watching as closely because it's way depressing. You know. Anyway, it seemed that these two silly dudes playing "hardball" really believed that Utah was screwing up by not getting a composite of the intruder. Yep, really lousing it up. Saying things like, "It just doesn't make any sense. What in th' Sam Hill are those fellows thinking up there?" in a really self-aggrandizing way.
But near the beginning of the investigation I saw a press conference with (I think) the chief of police. Reporters kept asking "Are you going to get the little sister to do a composite? When's the sketch artist come in to interview the little sister?" And the policeman kept saying "There's no point in putting the little girl through that, because the lights were off in the room. She could see the stature of the man, and hear his voice, see some light reflected on his clothes, but she couldn't see his face well enough to describe it to a sketcher." Basically, the sketch could turn out misleading because neither the little sis or the sketcher would know what to draw so they'd have to fill in the blanks from their imaginations.
But these freaking stuffed shirts were acting so self-important there on television! Just spouting bullshit that doesn't help anything! I mean, I am a layperson and even I could remember what the police chief said ten days ago? And what about the family? Hopefully they're not watching any of this crap. But what about Elizabeth's friends? If I was 14 and I saw those dudes talking about my friend who was abducted...well, this is the sort of thing that would make me question the police's competence and screw up my psyche.
Anyway, there's the rant for the day. Enjoy!
