In keeping with blogging every day...
I present you with this excerpt of an email conversation I've been having with a relative. I wrote:
I never argued the Biblical implications of eating meat—you brought that to the table. I was simply pointing out a theoretical solution to world hunger. It’s a solution that I believe humankind could achieve with time. Whether or not God has given us (or just you, I guess) dominion over the animals is a moot point. Logistically, high-density farming cannot—even in theory, even “on the drawing board”—feed the world’s population.
Hardcore fanatic Christians confuse me so. I suggested that if Americans cut down to one meat meal a week (heck, two--even three) we'd save enough grain that would have otherwise been used for cattle food to feed world for that same amount of time. That's the truth, folks--in theory, anyway. Obviously, we haven't tried it. And this fellow came back at me with "I'm not going to talk about this. God gave man dominion over planet and the animals. We have permission to eat them. You'll have to take it up with Him."
That wasn't my point, dude! My point was if we try something different, maybe nobody would have to go to bed hungry.
