Pretty Penny
As per request of an adoring fan, here are some pictures of beautiful Penny. What a wonderful little hound! She and I had a lot of trouble bonding at first, but now I can't imagine not having her goofy little face around the house. She likes to wear her ears up on top of her head, across the top, the way little girls often wear their hair in french braids across the crown of their heads. Such a beautiful, sweet baby.

For those who don't know, here is Penny's story. She raced in Wichita for several years, and did okay. When she was retired, she was adopted right from the racetrack adoption agency, which doesn't screen potentials very well at all. Her new 'family' tied her up in the backyard for the next 6 years and she recieved no veterinary care during that time. Finally, she broke her chain and ran away, ran right to a woman's house across town who had greyhounds! This woman was appalled, because Penny was emaciated with worms wiggling from her body (you know what I mean). She called the number on Penny's tag, gave those people the what-for, and told them that they would not be getting their dog back.

She underwent rehabilitation for her starvation and worms, and went through a long and lifethreatening treatment for heartworms, which she, (obviously) survived. Then, shortly after she turned 10, we lost our beloved Deoji. Something drew us to Penny, and she came to live with us.

I see so much Deoji in her that I sometimes wonder if he guided me to her (I know that sounds nuts). They have so many similar mannerisms that sometimes, just for a moment, I *see* Deoji there instead of her. But Penny is entirely her own girl; very unique and precious. Smart, too. Well, in some ways...in other ways, she's just a goofy child-dog, who would gleefully run into traffic and get herself killed because she knows no better.

Penny likes to find pine cones in the yard and tear all the little spiny layers off. She also enjoys fluffing up pinestraw for a comfy outside bed and eating the bark off of one particular pine tree. As you can tell, she enjoys her new life here in the forest. She also enjoys tossing her head all around like a horse while smiling at Tom; licking people's (and Stetson's) ears; Beggin' Strips; and laying on the bed when she thinks she can get away with it.
