Old Dogs and New Tricks

A few days ago, Penny seemed to stablize. I didn't really believe it, but now I do. I think that old dog--thanks to a few new tricks--will be around for quite a bit longer. Well, measurable in weeks rather than days, anyway.

Her back legs are completely useless. What we've observed over the years is that when the back legs go (and they always do) the spirit goes fast. Then it's only a matter of days before your sweet doggywog tells you it's over. It's hard to explain that part, but if you've been through it with a pet you loved, then you know what I mean.

But Penny's spirits remained high, so we borrowed a doggie wheelchair. She doesn't like the wheelchair too much, but I think with time she'll acclimate. We only put her in it outside when it's walk time in the evening. Otherwise, we just carry her outside and hold her haunches while she does her business. BTW, she's 50 lbs. Have you lifted 50 lbs directly up off the ground, being careful not to jar the cargo, lately? I am developing great legs from this.

And here's something else. Ripple has food poisoning. See, I discovered a few days ago that my dogs are crazy about raisins. Then, a few nights ago in the dead of night, when Ripple was obviously very sick and had been for some time, I discovered (on the net) that raisins and grapes will cause some dogs to go into renal failure and die. And then, at the emergency vet an hour later, I discovered that Ripple is okay, but probably has food poisoning from the raisins. Moral: do not give your dogs raisins or grapes. If they get one or two, fine. If they get a handful, watch them carefully.

Oh, and Ripple has tested the new carpet for me--you know how it is when you have food poisoning. It's really, really nice to pull up a square, take it to the bathtub, spray it clean, hang it to dry, and plop a few spare squares into the empty spots. I would much rather clean the bathtub because it's got germs in it than get on my hands and knees and scrub diarrhea out of the rug for an hour.

Oh, and a clarification to my awful first period story--I didn't lick the toilet seat. I licked my finger. Does that make it any less appalling? I know, still gross, but does that make it any less appalling?

I'm glad Penny is doing better.

This take-away carpet is quite an interesting idea. This is what you needed when you lived in Jane's old shack when your toilet overflowed (overflew?) about 23 times a day.

Well, I was not really grossed out by the period story (although I think your friend's dad was rotten and insensitive), although I think I did internally cringe a little when you told how you licked the blood off your finger.

Nonetheless, I am eagerly waiting to read what happens with your colonic adventures. Are things (heh) coming out alright?
