So much stuff to tell!
Well, I was really afraid that the little town would be another Stillwater, but it's not. At least, so far it doesn't seem to be. :) It's a clean little place and about twice the size of Stillwater. It's a well-landscaped little town, and landscaping goes such a long way. It makes more of a difference than you may imagine it could.
So, Tom took the VAPship and I took the adjunct position, and then we decided we should try to find a place to live. Our lease here is up in not too long, and it's a long freaking drive to Georgia, so we thought, "Hey, if we can get this part solved while we're here, that's one less road trip we have to make this summer."
Long story short, we knew we didn't want to rent because Tom intends to complete the 3 year term at the university. He's never disappointed anybody scholastically yet (Mister two-time summa cum laude; the only blight is that for his BA he only came in magna cum laude) so we don't expect this university to be disappointed in him and not renew him for the full term. I'm really proud of him. Can't you tell! Also, the dept head told me that chances for me being an instructor next year and not just an adjunct are good as long as I perform well. So it seems they plan on trying to keep him around a while.
This is a little school; it only changed from "college" to "university" a few years back. Their fulltime faculty is made up of about 50-50 PhDs and MAs. I hope they have it in mind to make Tommy Boy one of the fulltimers one day. And maybe...just maybe...I can get in there too. I have an MA, after all.
So, we began the house hunt. Basically, we hoped to find a little house pretty much like Scott and Shelley's house here. That turned out not to be so easy.
With this town being only an hour from Atlanta, along with the "high-tech" industry setting up there (Sony has a branch there, for example), and the college becoming a university a decade or so ago, this little place has gotten too big for its britches really fast. There's nothing for sale there! Seriously! Only brand-new homes being built in very suburban-style subdivisions. We didn't want that, either environmentally or financially.
After days of harried searching, we decided on this little house. It's a 25 minute drive from the school but it's worth it--both environmentally and financially. I mean, look at this place! If you know me you know I love this. There *are* disadvantages...gotta use satellite tv, probably no highspeed internet access, gotta drive your trash to the trash pickup site down the street on Mondays...but it's a wonderful, sound little house. It's only 8 years old and we expect it to pass its inspection tomorrow with flying colors.
I can't believe it! The freedom to paint walls! Change fixtures! Eeeekkk! This is so cool.
