Let's try it again, shall we?

The week has been slow and dull

And that's about all I have to say.

Oh, and I lost a lb.

There MUST be more than that.

Oh, well, Tom and I are considering purchasing a doublewide. No, I'm serious. After living in the boonies, and driving past them every day for 2.5 years, they don't seem so bad. And we've been studying how to get one that looks nice.

Sometimes you'll see one that DOES look nice, and you think to yourself, Hm! Is that? Is that a doublewide? There are a few keys to getting a nice looking doublewide, in our observations:

1. It must be no wider than, say 45 feet. Stick-built homes don't tend to be wider than that, at least not around here. So seeing a very wide building is a dead giveaway.

2. It must be white or a color. No beige. No off-white. Ideally, it should have hardiplank or masonry siding, so that it can be painted. The extra bucks for the hardiplank makes the structure look more housey and less trailery.

3. YOU MUST LANDSCAPE. A doublewide requires a lot of landscaping in order to look less trailery.

4. If at all possible, plunk it down on a slab instead of just rolling it into place and putting the guard down to cover the wheels. From what I understand, some states require you keep the wheels on them. Here you can remove that undergirtering stuff and set them right down on a slab.

So WHY are we considering a doublewide? I know, it sounds like madness, esp since we have a real for-real house right now.

Well, the house is small. It only has two bedrooms. We'd like a third so that when we finally manage to steal, purchase, or birth a kid it can have a room that it doesn't have to share with the computer. Additionally, the location of our swimming pool is bad--I am constantly worrying about animals falling in. It's not in a location where we can fence it, either.

And then, most importantly perhaps, we could purchase a few acres and a brand spanking new doublewide for about $70,000. Which would be a mortgage considerably smaller than the one we're paying now. Since I'm not going to work next semester, and Tom's salary is not fabulous, the little white trailer house seems better every time we talk about it!

Who knows. A week from now we could be shaking our heads in disbelief of the fact that we even considered it.

Yeah, I had negative impressions of doublewides, too. But I've seen, out here in the country, that the trick is to get a little one. If you put it on a slab, landscape, and make sure it's all drywalled on the inside, it's hard to tell it was made in a big factory.

You know what? If you are happy, then who cares where you live?? I say go for it.

And should you ever marry Family Guy's Brian, I think a double-wide would be fitting.

P.S. Is the Halloween trunk out yet? I miss looking through your Halloween trunk.
