I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Madonna is starting to suck
Yep, it's true. Okay, let's all admit that Die Another Day was a boring single. The video was cool as shit, but the song itself was a tad dull and unimaginative. Then, we've got that dreadful movie Washed Out to Sea or whatever, and then, the aborted video for American Life.
American Life was supposed to be soooo controversial, although it always sounded kind of dumb to me: A fashion show with the models all dressed in fatigues, Madonna among them, and then they throw grenades into the audience. Um, okay well, whatever. Then, on April 4th, the day it is supposed to be released with great fanfare on MTV, she pulls it, says it's disrespectful to the troops, blah blah. I think she was scared by what happened to the Dixie Chicks or maybe she thought that would be a great publicity thing: Madonna has such a social conscience.
Now, the new video for American Life: Madonna in some sort of quasi-hitleresque military suit, sort of looking dominatrixey, with various flags flashing behind her. Booooring. And, let's admit that the song blows. It peps up at the end for about 20 seconds with her rap, in which you get to hear some of the old Madonna (before she began to fancy herself so sophisticated) but 20 seconds does not a song make.
And, let's examine her "seeding" kazaa, bearshare, limewire and the rest with fake tracks from the album American Life. Did you hear about this? The files are the appropriate size and appear to be the actual song tracks, but are in fact just her saying "What the fuck do you think you're doing?" over and over again. Lots of artists don't support p2p sharing. Okay, fine. But that's just a really snotty gesture coming from Madonna, Ms. Forbes Billionare Lady. And, if she were going to seed the p2p network with fake files, something less belligerent would have accomplished the same feat and maybe even *endeared* fans to her a bit more. Something like "Ha ha, fooled you. You'll have to wait until April 24. Please buy my album from a store. Thank you! Kiss kiss" or whatever.
In fact, it pissed somebody off enough that they did this to her website. Serves you right, Madonna, for being shitty and loaded to the gills with cash. I mean, it's not like you're just a struggling artist. And all the real bands I've known well (which is only two: The Breeders and Hum) say that you don't make money off the albums anyway, but off of the tours that follow the albums. Remember tours, Madge? Last time I had a shot at going to one of your shows was 1992 and the ticket was $125. I wonder what they cost now??? Maybe you should do more than ten dates a year.
And, on her website there is an annoying clicky that says "Download the American Life single here." But you click it and she wants you to pay $1.50 to download it. Jeezums. Many artists give the single away on the net nowadays. She could at least change the clicky to "Buy the single here."
I think Madonna knows that she's made a shitty album this time. She's afraid that if people get a good, full listen to it they won't buy it because it sounds like the cutting room floor clips from the Music album mixed with the cutting room floor clips from Hole's pathetic Celebrity Skin. Go listen to these cruddy tunes at MTV's listening station for free.
