Baffling

You know what baffles me? That I can go for three weeks without posting, and yet you guys still drop in and notice when I do. You are either really nice or really bored!

What else am I baffled about lately? Well, I'm baffled by my lack of being content with life. Here I am, allowed to be out of work for several months and just laze around the house and do whatever the hell I want, and I'm still suffering from a feeling of discontent. I mean, I could do ANYTHING with my time--travel, take dance classes, tan, read books, write books, anything--and I still feel restless. What is up with that? The world is my oyster, and I feel restless.

And then weird on top of that is that I sign up to go back to work in the fall, and now I'm anxious over that. I find myself thinking, "Gah, I don't want to go! I am so tired of teaching! Why am I doing this to myself? The movie Malcolm X is three and a half fucking hours long, for god's sake!!" That last part comes from the fact that I will be teaching two sections of Freshman Comp and we're to show the movie Malcolm X and make our kids write a paper about it because Spike Lee is coming to give a talk at our school. But do you know what? That damn movie is three and a half hours long. When's the last time you tried to teach a three and a half hour long movie in class? To freshman? Fuck, fuck, this will suck. We also have to teach some movie of his called 25th Hour. I do not know how long that one is. I guess the good news is that for many days' worth of class time, I'll have no prep, but still...ugh.

You see, what I WANT to do with my time is something that I can't do. I want to open my own business. Long ago, Chris warned me never to speak of things like this because magically some Schmo who lives in your town will hear the words floating on the wind five miles away and steal your idea. But I'm speaking anyway.

What I want to do, and have wanted to do since before I left Oklahoma, is have my own pet boarding business. I won't go into depth of explanation of my ideas here, but my friend Randi in OK had her own pet daycare and boarding house and I was seriously jealous. What's stopping me from doing it is money to get my facilities all set up. It's sort of ironic, because if I would just bite the freaking bullet and work full time as a prof for a few years I could have the money to do it, but I AM SO SICK OF TEACHING! argh.

Anyway, that's all my news. I haven't taken any pictures of the new boobs yet. But I will eventually.

Wow, that turtle has really moved since the last time I looked.

You shouldn't be baffled that we check on you regularly. It's not that we're being really nice or bored; you're our friend and we love, and we want to know what you're up to and how you're doing. There's nothing baffling about that, is there?

Cindy's right. You would be a good doggy daycare owner. And really, if this desire has been with you after all these years, you have to plan it out and do it.

    Now, show us your boobs!

Go for it. Don't teach if you don't want to teach. Let's face it: it's really not that rewarding and the pay is shit. Don't feel bad if you don't want to do it. I retract all of my comments from five years about how teaching is the greatest profession ever. It has its good points--I still like standing in front of a room and ordering people around--but you have plenty of other talents on which you can capitalize.

    Here's my suggestion:

    1) Send a book proposal to a nonfiction publisher. It will be a memoir about finding yourself professionally (from teacher to dog sitter). Emphasize that TWO best-sellers right now are about dogs.

    2) Get book deal.

    3) Open doggie daycare.

    4) Write memoir about going from teacher to dog nanny (danny?)

    5) Profit (emotionally and financially)

    Now show us your boobs.

Jasper stays at the Bed and Biscuit when I go on vacation. That's such a cool name I had to tell you. Show us your boobs.

The lady who owns the Bed and Biscuit also does doggy daycare and is a certified groomer. You should do that. She makes piles of money. She hires teenagers to help with the dogs in the kennel, which is decorated like a bed and breakfast, has a tv and radio so dogs can listen to something, and cameras so she can watch the dogs from inside her house or grooming shop. She has a small dog run around the kennel.
